We seek a person to fill a two-year role as Science Mission Deputy for the Carbon Mapper (CM) satellite mission, a public-private partnership program involving CarbonMapper.org, Planet Inc., Jet Propulsion Laboratory, University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and the state of California.
The Deputy will lead a team of postdoctoral research scientists focused on the development and implementation of land and ocean science algorithms in support of the satellite mission. CM will initially launch two Earth-orbiting satellites in 2023 making hyperspectral observations in the 400-2500 nm wavelength range. The Science Mission Deputy and team will be responsible for developing and validating science algorithms for a range of applications, including but not limited to agriculture, mineralogy and infrastructure, to be integrated into Planet’s commercial data platform. The team will complement and coordinate with CM’s methane and carbon research program. The team will utilize airborne imaging spectroscopy (hyperspectral) measurements made by the Global Airborne Observatory in preparation for the satellite mission. The Science Mission Deputy will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of a postdoctoral science applications team as well as specific algorithms in her/his area of expertise.
Minimum qualifications for the Science Mission Deputy:
- PhD or equivalent training in Earth observation with demonstrated/published background in imaging spectroscopy (hyperspectral remote sensing)
- At least three years of experience with developing and implementing remote sensing algorithms for imaging spectroscopy research or applications
- Ability to coordinate and lead small groups of remote sensing scientists, and ability to report to mission leadership on team activities and research developments
- Strong computer programming skills as applied to remote sensing
- Command of English language in both written and oral form and the ability to work in the United States.
- Record of peer-reviewed scientific publications as both a lead author and co-author
This position will report to the CM Chief Science Officer, Dr. Greg Asner and coordinate with the CM Carbon Project Scientist and science product leaders at Planet. The Science Mission Deputy and science team will be based at the Center for Global Discovery and Conservation Science (http://gdcs.asu.edu), within the Global Futures Laboratory at Arizona State University, in Tempe, AZ. GDCS leads spatially-explicit scientific and technological research focused on mitigating and adapting to global environmental change.
