Whale Watching Naturalist; Seastreak Whale Watching

Seastreak Whale Watching is starting its second season this May and is looking to hire a naturalist to lead the weekend trips. The individual selected for this position should have a background in marine biology, education, or related subjects.

It is the responsibility of the naturalist to provide informative and entertaining narration for the duration of the tour. Preferred candidates will have extensive knowledge of local marine wildlife, geography, and history, or a willingness to study and master Seastreak’s whale watching educational materials.


All our whale watching boats leave out of Highlands, NJ. We will host one trip a day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Each trip will depart for a three hour tour at 12:30 PM. The naturalist hired for this position will lead the weekend tours. Naturalists will not have direct contact with the passengers aboard the boat, and will communicate via a microphone. Trips begin May 1st and end in November.


  • Public speaking experience
  • Ability to communicate complex topics in marine science to customers in simple terms
  • Willingness to study and master Seastreak’s whale watching educational materials
  • Must be comfortable on the water
  • Ability to multitask
  • An interest in marine science, and/or whale biology and conservation
  • Can provide the highest level of customer service and professionalism to all passengers
  • Can pass a pre-employment drug-test
  • Willing to wear a mask and abide by all of Seastreak’s COVID-19 precautions while working
  • Commitment to following all Coast Guard, NOAA, and Whale SENSE responsible whale watching guidelines


  • A degree in biology, marine science/policy, education, or conservation
  • Previous experience as a naturalist or educator
  • Experience with whale (and fish, sea turtle, shark, dolphin, etc.) species identification
  • Mastery of subject matter related to marine ecosystems, ocean conservation, humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins, menhaden, and other marine life.
