Chief of Habitat Management; Virginia Marine Resources Commission

The Marine Resources Commission (MRC) serves as stewards of Virginia’s marine and aquatic resources and serves as protectors of its tidal waters and homelands. The MRC is seeking to fill the position of Chief of Habitat Management. The Chief of Habitat Management has executive responsibility for the administration of a state regulatory permit program governing the use or development of marine habitat. This position supervises the preparation of objective analyses, recommendations and audiovisual presentations to the Commission at formal monthly public hearings, and reviews decisions of 35 separate local wetlands boards, annually. It prepares all policy level correspondence, supervises presentation of formal appeals of local wetlands board decisions and provides policy guidance and direction to the field environmental engineers. It may also conduct field investigations when complex technical, legal, and policy issues have or are likely to emerge. This position will maintain extensive and continuous liaison with numerous state, federal regulatory and advisory agencies, as well as local government. The Chief of Habitat Management represents MRC at various conferences, symposia, legislative committees, and at meetings where coastal resource management issues are considered.

Minimum Qualifications

Extensive knowledge of the marine environment and the natural resources which depend on that environment as their habitat; an extensive administrative and managerial skillset; proven ability to motivate and manage highly technical and professional staff; High School Diploma, or the equivalent, with studies in marine affairs, marine science, environmental engineering or associated fields; supervisory experience in local, state, or federal regulatory or resource management.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in Environmental Science or a related field of study;
