Sponsoring Organization: NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS)
Description: The ACE Basin NERR, designated in 1992, consists of about 140,000 acres and is one of 27 national reserves located along the US coastline. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) is a network of federal, state, and local partnerships that emphasize resource stewardship, monitoring of estuarine conditions, management-oriented research, technical information transfer, and environmental education. Reserves such as the ACE Basin, play an important part in preserving our coasts and serve as local links to protect and restore coastal habitats and biodiversity, promote clean coastal waters, and foster sustainable coastal communities compatible with the natural environment.

Duration: 01/01/1992 to present (as of 08/28/2012)

Program Purpose: Research directly related to the management of the ACE reserve's resources is actively encouraged and is a high priority. More than 30 research and monitoring projects (including cumulative environmental impacts, contaminant assessments, population assessments and environmental stress indicators) have been conducted by government agencies, academic institutions and private organizations in or adjacent to the ACE Basin NERR. However, the primary focus of the reserve research program is to conduct long-term monitoring projects that provide spatial and temporal information about the physical, chemical and biological conditions in the ACE Basin.

Data Access Information: Data is available from the NERR Centralized Data Management Office
Data Access Policy Web URL: http://cdmo.baruch.sc.edu/data/policy.cfm
Sampling Design: The research sector of NINERR is managed according to the Reserve management plan, the NERRS strategic plan, and the NERRS Research and Monitoring Plan (2006-2011, http://nerrs.noaa.gov/pdf/Research_Monitoring.pdf). The NERRS Research and Monitoring Plan (2006-2011) provides four goals that direct the system-wide research and monitoring efforts.
Sampling Frequency: Continuous water quality and weather monitoring, with near-real-time data access
Quality Assurance Plan: All NERR SWMP data incur primary data QAQC at the individual NERR by Reserve staff. The CDMO provides the Reserve with tools such as Microsoft Excel macros and data management software. Excel macros format the data to the proper specifications with the appropriate headers and data management software (GemTeck EQWin) identifies data set outliers, large changes in the data, generates reports, statistics and graphs. Data are then submitted to the CDMO where it undergoes secondary QAQC. The data and its accompanying documentation, metadata, are checked for completeness and against each other before being disseminated via the CDMO Online Data Information Server (http://cdmo.baruch.sc.edu).
