A GIS Water Quality Database for Georgia's Coastal Zone Counties

PI: Randal L. Walker and Karen Payne (Univ of Georgia Marine Extension Service, Athens, GA, USA)

Support: GA DNR Coastal Zone Management (through a Coastal Incentive Grant) and funds from the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Timeframe: 2000 - 2005

Project Overview:
The University of Georgia's Marine Extension Service (MAREX) is developing a single Geographic Information System (GIS) database for all existing water quality parameters (temperature, water salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrient levels, turbidity, pH, E. coli counts, etc.).

To date, water quality information has been collected from: United States Environmental Protection Agency (National Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems); Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Division (National Shellfisheries Sanitation Program, Environmental Protection Division's rend Monitoring Program, Shrimp Survey Program, and Coastal 2000 Program); Sapelo Island Marine Institute; Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve, Friends of Sapelo Adopt-A-Stream; School of Marine Program's Long Term Monitoring Program, and the Altamaha Riverkeepers.

This project is part of a larger effort by the Marine Extension Service to evaluate coastal water quality. http://www.uga.edu/marine_advisory/waterquality.html
