Assessing Shoreline Change and Coastal Hazards for the Georgia Coast

PIs: Clark Alexander, Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and David M. Bush, University of West Georgia, Department of Geosciences

Support: Sea Grant College Program

Timeframe: 2008 - 2009

Project Overview:
The main focus of the project is the development of tools and protocols for shoreline change assessment. Once the methods are in place, a series of workshops will be held to see how easy the tools are to learn and work with.

Accomplishments:

Goulds Inlet has been mapped as a model for studying inlet dynamics in Georgia.

Project members have created detailed erosion maps for the GA barrier islands, both front and back sides – these data will be used to enhance hazard maps for each of the barrier islands.  The barrier island maps will be at a larger scale that the county-wide maps being produced by Bush.

The workshop format has been developed, and we will be promoting and offering the first workshop in Autumn 2009.

Presentation of results have been made at local and national meetings (see below).

Students supported (in whole or part):
Chester Jackson, Rochelle Petruccelli, and Andrew Maloof
