Field Assessment and Simulation of Shading from Alternative Dock Construction Materials

Project Overview:
Four mock docks have been constructed and are on the experimental site at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography campus. The study includes one traditional deck, one fiberglass grating deck, one fiber re-enforced plastic grating deck, and one Sundock Dockrider system deck. A web camera was installed on an adjacent building to collect still images every 3 minutes during the day to validate dock placement away from non-dock shading sources, and light sources were mounted to the docks.
Results to Date :
Dr. Risa Cohen with the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University and a masters graduate student working with her will be doing field experiments of in-situ docks. The methods and protocols for field experiments have been defined and data collection will begin this October at the peak of aboveground salt marsh biomass.
