February 2004
[1] The workshop on marsh dieback last week in Savannah was quite successful
- and we again say "thanks" to all who contributed or participated.
The schedule and research summary titles are now available: http://www.marsci.uga.edu/coastalcouncil/dieback_workshop.htm [2] Georgia Sea Grant was sent information about an upcoming "Sustainable Beaches Summit" organized by the Clean Beaches Council. The event will be held March 29-31, in Sandestin, Florida. The Summit is described as "a groundbreaking effort to bring together a diverse cross-section of beach professionals and coastal educators from federal agencies, state and local governments, non-governmental organizations, academia, and industry." Sponsors include: US Army Corps of Engineers, USGS, US EPA, NOAA, and the Center for SeaChange. For more information, please see http://www.cleanbeaches.com/sustainable/default.cfm or contact the CBC c/o Pilliod Meeting Planning, 1001 C Street, SE, Washington, DC 20003. Fax 202-544-7992, summit@cleanbeaches.org [3] Doug Haymans contacted our staff to ask if the GCRC might help identify someone interested in serving on the blue crab advisory committee for the Coastal Resources Division of DNR. His email and contact information follow: Mr. Haymans wrote, "The Coastal Resources Division (CRD) maintains two fishing industry advisory panels, blue crab and shrimp, that are intended to "advise" CRD on matters relating to the industries. Depending on the individual being asked, these committees have worked fairly well over their first decade of existence. However, with the most recent blue crab population crisis, the committee make-up has come under some harsh criticism in that they are made up of all commercial fishermen. In an effort to diversify the committees, we are adding several recreational fishermen as well as two scientists that are independent of this agency." More details on the position and contact information were provided when this announcement was made. March 2004A new, on-line workshop on Understanding Aquatic Nuisance Species is being offered March 8-24 by The Dauphin Island Sea Lab (Alabama) and the J. L. Scott Marine Education Center and Aquarium (University of Sourthern Mississippi). Registration is free, and is still open. For more information, please visit http://www.coexploration.org/ans/index.html Thank you to Margaret Olsen and Karen Payne for alerting us to this opportunity. April 2004We thought some of you might be interested in this program. Thanks go to Brad Gane at CRD for forwarding the information. As per the website <http://es.epa.gov/ncer/rfa/2004/2004_aqua_sys.html>,
the Information on the workshop presentations and discussions are available online at: http://www.environmentalfutures.org/agenda.htm. As a result of insights gleaned from this meeting and from the scientific literature, EPA decided to publish this request for applications. August 2004The U.S. Geological Survey is interested in identifying funding partners for the installation of additional water monitoring stations in the coastal Georgia region. The GCRC has no budget to fund such a project, but we agreed to spread the word. We encourage you to take a look at the attached proposals for the Coastal Hydrologic Monitoring Network. Then, please circulate them to other interested parties and contact Brian McCallum (770-903-9127) with any questions or comments. Thank you for your time. Coastal Monitoring Proposal.pdf gives information on the Coastal Hydrologic Monitoring Network Proposal, including: Coastal Stream Monitoring, Barrier Island Monitoring, Hurricane Evacuation Route Monitoring and a map of potential monitoring sites. Ossabaw Island.pdf is an example of a proposal for real-time water quality monitoring equipment. The two attachments are not included here in the archives. August 2004 (#2)In case you aren't already aware, note that there are public meetings this week on the marsh and shore regulations being developed by Georgia DNR. They are Tuesday evening in Savannah and Wednesday evening in Brunswick (see below). If you can't attend, be aware that written comments are also welcome, but must be submitted by September 14th. I've copied the Coastal Resources Division's web announcement below. CRD To Hold Public Meetings on Marsh and Shore Regulations The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Coastal Resources Division (CRD) will hold two public meetings on the coast to receive input to develop marsh and shore regulations. The purpose of these meetings is to invite public input in order to incorporate suggestions into a regulation package that will be considered by the DNR Board of Natural Resources for approval later this fall. Those interested are encouraged to bring these meetings to the attention of others that also may be interested in participating. The delineation of jurisdictional areas regulated under the Coastal Marshlands Protection Act and the Shore Protection Act is the primary focus of these meetings, particularly marsh and shore delineation methods and standards, including survey standards. The original listserv message included the time and location of each meeting as well as contact information for CRD. December 2004We thought that some of you might be interested to know about a Piping Plover meeting February 1-4, 2005 organized by the American Bird Conservancy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We received the information below from Casey Lott (of the American Bird Conservancy) and questions should be directed to: clott@abcbirds.org or (631) 470-5776. Original text follows: Registration update for ABC/Corps/Plover meeting at Jekyll Island, Feb 1-4, 2005 This is a brief reminder to please pre- register by email if you are planning on attending the American Bird Conservancy and US Army Corps of Engineers’ meeting (February 1-4, Jekyll Island, Georgia) on the related topics of: 1) wintering ecology of Piping Plovers and 2) dredging, beach nourishment, and birds.
